Nurturing Ministries Under Current Church Structure
In recent years, we have been experimenting with new ways to do church business. Under the current model, there are two main ministries: Outreach and Nurturing. Outreach, in this context, includes evangelism, fellowship, and mission. Nurturing includes Christian Education, Worship and the arts.
Worship
Worship services have been undergoing a transition from a formal traditional format to a less formal blended service at 11 AM. This service is intended to include more contemporary praise music mixed with traditional hymns. The choir sings an anthem and an instrumental group supports the congregational singing. In the Disciples tradition, communion is shared every week with those who wish to participate.
A Taize' Service is held from 7:00 to 7:30 PM on the 1st and 3rd Sunday evening of each month. This service is a quiet and prayerful opportunity for some peace in one's busy schedule.
Christian Education
Christian education is also in the process of change. As in some earlier times, all classes are classes are held at 9:30 AM. We often have another event at 7 PM.
9:30 AM Bible study class. This Adult class meets in the library using “The Present Word”, a Bible study led by Max Perry and Don Houck.
9:30 AM adult exploratory class. This class has been discussing ideas based on Michael Kinnamon's articles in the Disciple World. The topic is a series that relate the identity of the Disciples of Christ. Michael Kinnamon is an ordained Disciples minister and former professor of theology at Eden and Lexington Theological Seminaries. He is now general secretary of the National Council of Churches (USA).
7 PM event. This event is open to families, as well as, adults. A book discussion group continues to meet on the fourth Sunday evening. Events for other weeks are under consideration.
